Chapter 8
What would it take to convince a committed physicalist that consciousness can function independently of the brain?
That is not a rhetorical question. I think it deserves a serious answer. In Chapter 6, we examined veridical near-death experiences — cases where patients accurately reported information they could not have known while they were clinically dead. That evidence is powerful. But a determined physicalist can always retreat to the hypothesis that some unknown residual brain mechanism was at work. Maybe the brain was not quite as "dead" as we thought. Maybe some tiny flicker of electrical activity, too faint for our instruments to detect, was enough to produce the experience.
In Chapter 7, we looked at the Pam Reynolds case. Her brain was drained of blood, cooled to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and showed absolutely no measurable electrical activity on the EEG. Yet she had vivid, accurate, verified experiences during that time. The physicalist escape hatch gets much smaller here. But a truly stubborn critic can still say, "Well, perhaps the experience happened during the brief window before or after the standstill, not during it." It is difficult to prove the negative — that zero brain activity means zero consciousness — when you cannot get inside someone's brain at the exact moment of the experience.
But what if I told you there was a category of evidence that closes the escape hatch entirely?
What if a person who has been blind from birth — who has never seen a single thing in their entire life, whose brain has never processed visual input of any kind, whose visual cortex has been physically reorganized to handle other tasks — suddenly reports seeing during an NDE? Not vague impressions. Not "feelings" of visual information. Actual seeing — colors, shapes, the appearance of doctors, the details of their own body lying on the operating table. And what if those details were later verified by sighted witnesses?
That is exactly what Kenneth Ring and Sharon Cooper documented in their landmark study, published in 1999 under the title Mindsight. And I believe it represents some of the most devastating evidence against physicalism in the entire NDE literature.1
Chapter Thesis: Cases of congenitally blind people who report accurate visual perception during NDEs — seeing colors, shapes, and details they have never experienced in their entire lives — represent a category of evidence that is essentially inexplicable on physicalism, because the physical substrate required for visual experience does not exist in these patients.
Let me explain why this evidence matters so much, and then we will walk through the cases together.
To appreciate the force of this evidence, we need to understand a basic fact about how vision works in the brain. I will keep this simple, but the science matters.
When a sighted person sees something, light enters the eye, hits the retina, and sends electrical signals through the optic nerve to a region at the back of the brain called the visual cortex. The visual cortex processes these signals — sorting them into edges, colors, shapes, motion, depth — and produces what we experience as "seeing." This is a complex, highly specialized system that involves billions of neural connections.
Here is the critical point: the visual cortex must be trained during a critical period in early childhood. During the first few years of life, visual input from the eyes shapes and organizes the visual cortex. Neurons that process edges connect to neurons that process shapes, which connect to neurons that process motion, and so on. Without this early visual input, the visual cortex does not develop the neural architecture needed for vision. Instead, the brain — which is remarkably efficient — repurposes that cortical real estate for other functions, like processing touch or sound.2
This is why restoring physical sight to a person who has been blind from birth is so extraordinarily difficult. Even if you could repair their eyes perfectly, the brain would not know what to do with the visual signals. The hardware was never built. The neural pathways for vision were never formed. It would be like plugging a USB cable into a computer that has no USB drivers installed — the connection exists, but the computer cannot interpret the data.
So here is the question that should keep every physicalist awake at night: if a congenitally blind person — a person whose brain literally lacks the neural architecture for visual processing — reports accurate visual experiences during an NDE, where is the visual experience coming from?
On physicalism, the answer is: it cannot be coming from anywhere. The brain does not have the equipment. It is not a matter of enhancing existing brain function or tapping into some hidden reserve. The hardware simply does not exist. You cannot run software on hardware that was never installed.
On substance dualism, by contrast, the answer is straightforward. The soul — the immaterial part of the person — has its own capacity for perception that does not depend on the physical sense organs. When the soul separates from the body during an NDE, it perceives the world directly. The blind person's physical eyes cannot see, but their soul can perceive. When freed from the limitations of the damaged body, the soul sees — perhaps for the first time ever.3
That is the theoretical framework. Now let us look at the evidence.
Kenneth Ring is one of the most respected NDE researchers in the world. A professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut, Ring was among the first academic researchers to take NDEs seriously. His earlier books — Life at Death (1980) and Heading Toward Omega (1984) — established him as a rigorous, methodologically careful scholar who approached the NDE phenomenon with both an open mind and high scientific standards.4
In the 1990s, Ring turned his attention to a question that had been nagging at him for years: do blind people have visual experiences during NDEs? If they do, this would be enormously significant. If they do not, it might suggest that the visual component of NDEs is produced by the visual cortex — and blind people, lacking a functioning visual cortex, would not have it. Either way, the answer would tell us something important about the nature of NDE perception.
Working with his colleague Sharon Cooper, Ring set out to find and interview blind persons who had reported NDEs or out-of-body experiences (OBEs). This was not easy. Blind NDErs are a relatively rare group — you need someone who is both blind and has come close to death. Ring and Cooper used multiple channels to locate participants, including organizations for the blind, NDE research networks, and advertisements.5
They eventually assembled a study of 31 blind and visually impaired persons who reported NDEs or OBEs. The participants fell into three categories:
Group 1: 14 people who were congenitally blind — blind from birth. These individuals had never experienced visual perception of any kind. Their brains had never received or processed visual input. Several were blind due to a condition called retinopathy of prematurity (also known as retrolental fibroplasia), in which the retinas are damaged by excessive oxygen exposure in incubators.6
Group 2: 11 people who had become blind later in life (adventitiously blind). These individuals had once been able to see but had lost their sight due to illness, injury, or degeneration.
Group 3: 6 people who were severely visually impaired — legally blind but with some minimal residual light perception.
The most evidentially significant group, of course, was Group 1 — the congenitally blind. If these individuals reported visual experiences during their NDEs, it would be extremely difficult to explain on physicalist grounds, because their brains had never developed the capacity for visual processing.
The results were remarkable. The blind and visually impaired participants reported NDEs that contained the same core features as those of sighted people: leaving the body, moving through a dark space, encountering a brilliant light, meeting deceased loved ones, visiting beautiful other-worldly environments, and being told or choosing to return. But the stunning finding was this: many of these blind participants — including some who were congenitally blind — reported visual perception during their NDEs.7
They described seeing their own bodies from above, often for the first time in their lives. They described the visual appearance of the medical staff working on them. They described the layout and details of the hospital rooms. They described colors, shapes, and spatial relationships. And when their descriptions could be checked against the testimony of sighted people who were present, they were accurate.
Ring coined a term for this phenomenon: mindsight. He defined it as a kind of transcendent awareness — a form of perception that operates through the mind or soul rather than through the physical sense organs. It was not ordinary vision. Several of the blind participants noted that it was different from anything they had ever experienced — not like dreaming, not like imagining, not like hearing or touching. It was a new mode of perception entirely, and they struggled to find words for it because they had no frame of reference.8
Key Finding: Ring and Cooper studied 31 blind or visually impaired persons who reported NDEs or OBEs. Among the 14 who were congenitally blind — people whose brains had never processed visual input — many reported visual perception during their NDEs, including seeing their own bodies, medical staff, and detailed surroundings. Several of these reports were verified by sighted witnesses. Ring coined the term "mindsight" for this form of perception that operates independently of the physical sense organs.
Let us now look at the most important individual cases.
Of all the cases Ring and Cooper documented, the story of Vicki Umipeg is the most widely discussed — and for good reason. Vicki was born extremely premature, and like many premature infants in that era, she was placed in an incubator with high concentrations of oxygen. The excessive oxygen destroyed her optic nerves, causing a condition known as retrolental fibroplasia. From birth, Vicki was completely blind. She had never seen anything — not light, not shadow, not the faintest glimmer of visual input. She had no concept of what "seeing" was like. Her world was entirely composed of sound, touch, smell, and taste.9
In 1973, at the age of twenty-two, Vicki was seriously injured in an automobile accident. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where her condition was critical. It was during this medical crisis that she had her near-death experience.
Vicki told Ring that the first thing she was aware of was being up near the ceiling, looking down. She could see a body on the operating table below her. With a shock, she realized the body was hers. She had never seen her own body before — she had never seen anything before — and the experience was disorienting. She noticed the long hair on the body and recognized it as hers. She saw the medical team working on her. She saw the details of the room.10
Now, stop and think about that for a moment. A woman who has never experienced vision of any kind — who has no concept of color, shape, light, or shadow — suddenly finds herself perceiving the world visually. She sees a body. She sees people moving around the room. She sees equipment and details. For the first time in twenty-two years of life, she is seeing.
But the experience did not stop there. Vicki described being pulled upward through the ceiling and the roof of the hospital. She could see the roof and the surroundings of the building. Then she traveled through a dark enclosure — what many NDErs describe as a tunnel — and emerged into a realm of extraordinary beauty and light. She described brilliant colors, beautiful landscapes, and a profound sense of peace and joy. She encountered deceased friends and relatives, including two schoolmates who had died years earlier. She also encountered a figure she identified as Jesus, radiating overwhelming light and love.11
When Ring asked Vicki specifically about the visual nature of her experience, she confirmed that she had indeed been seeing — something she had never done before in her life. She was not just "sensing" or "knowing" information in some vague way. She was perceiving visual details: colors, shapes, spatial relationships, the appearance of people and objects. And she found it difficult to describe because she had no prior visual experiences to compare it to. She told Ring that the experience was "frightening" at first — not because it was threatening, but because it was so utterly unlike anything she had ever known.12
John Burke, in Imagine Heaven, notes the extraordinary nature of Vicki's case. Ring and Cooper carefully interviewed Vicki and documented her experience in detail. Burke highlights that Vicki's visual descriptions of her surroundings were accurate — she described things she could not have known through her other senses alone.13
I want to emphasize something here. This is not a story about a person who had some fuzzy, dreamlike experience that could be interpreted in various ways. Vicki described specific visual details of her environment — her own body, the medical staff, the hospital surroundings — that she had never seen before and could not have known through hearing or touch alone. She was blind from birth. Her brain had never processed a single photon of light. And yet, during her NDE, she saw.
Brad Barrows provides another striking case from Ring and Cooper's research. Brad, like Vicki, had been blind from birth. He lived at the Boston Center for Blind Children when, at the age of eight, he developed severe pneumonia. His heart stopped for approximately four minutes.14
Brad described what happened next: during the night, he became very stiff and rigid, gasping for air. He felt certain he was dying. Then his awareness began to float upward through the room. He found himself near the ceiling, and from that vantage point he could "see" — his word — his apparently lifeless body lying on the bed below.
But here is the detail that makes Brad's case so compelling. He also saw his blind roommate get out of bed and leave the room to get help. This detail was later confirmed by the roommate. An eight-year-old blind boy, floating near the ceiling with his heart stopped, accurately observed his roommate's actions — actions he could not have perceived through sound alone in his unconscious state.15
Brad then found himself moving upward through the ceiling and above the building. He described seeing the roof of the building and the surrounding area. He reported seeing snow on the ground everywhere, except on the streets, which had been cleared by plows. He also saw a streetcar pass by and recognized a familiar playground used by his schoolmates and a hill he used to climb nearby.16
When Ring asked Brad whether he "knew" these things or "saw" them, Brad was emphatic: he saw them. He clearly visualized them, he said, in a way he had never experienced before or since. It was not like hearing or touching or imagining. It was seeing.17
After this period of visual perception of his earthly surroundings, Brad — much like Vicki — was drawn upward at an angle into a dark tunnel. Interestingly, he noted that inside the tunnel, his newfound sight disappeared. There was no color, only darkness. Brad described this as puzzling, since he had just been seeing and now the sight was gone. He emerged from the tunnel into a brilliant, light-filled environment where his sight returned with even greater intensity.18
Think about what we have here. A blind eight-year-old boy, during cardiac arrest, accurately describes visual details of his surroundings — snow on the ground, plowed streets, a passing streetcar, his roommate's actions — that he could not have known through any normal sensory channel. He was unconscious, his heart had stopped, and he was blind. Yet he saw.
The Weight of Brad's Case: Brad Barrows was eight years old, blind from birth, and in cardiac arrest. He accurately described his roommate leaving the room to get help (later confirmed), snow on the ground, plowed streets, and a passing streetcar. An eight-year-old blind boy with a stopped heart saw things he had never seen before — and got the details right. On physicalism, this should be impossible.
Vicki and Brad are the most famous cases, but they were not the only ones. Ring and Cooper documented a consistent pattern across their participants. Let me briefly summarize some additional findings.
One participant, referred to in the study as "Frank," had been blind from birth due to bilateral retinoblastoma (a cancer of the retina that required both eyes to be surgically removed as a young child). Frank reported an out-of-body experience during which he perceived himself floating above his body. He described the visual appearance of his surroundings. Like the other congenitally blind participants, Frank said the experience was unlike anything he had ever known. It was not dreaming. It was not imagining. It was a mode of perception he had no name for.19
Another participant, "Marsha," blind since birth from retinopathy of prematurity, reported an NDE in which she perceived brilliant light, beautiful colors, and a landscape of extraordinary beauty. She said the visual aspects of her experience were "overwhelming" — not frightening, but overwhelming in the sense that she was suddenly experiencing an entirely new dimension of reality that she had never known existed.20
Across the study, Ring and Cooper found a consistent pattern among the congenitally blind participants: they reported visual or visual-like perception during their NDEs, they described the experience as profoundly different from any other sensory experience they had ever had, they often found it difficult to articulate what they experienced because they had no visual vocabulary, and several of their descriptions contained details that were verified by sighted witnesses.21
Ring and Cooper also documented the case of a woman they refer to as "Nancy," who had been blind from birth. Nancy reported an NDE during a medical crisis in which she found herself floating above her body. What struck the researchers was how Nancy described the experience of sight itself. She had, of course, no prior visual framework — no mental library of shapes, colors, or spatial relationships to draw from. And yet she described perceiving her surroundings with a startling clarity. She said the experience was beautiful beyond words, and she was overwhelmed by the sheer novelty of what was happening. She had never imagined — could never have imagined — what "seeing" was like. Now, suddenly, she was doing it.46
What is particularly noteworthy about these additional cases is the emotional response of the congenitally blind participants. For sighted people, seeing is so ordinary that we barely think about it. But for someone who has lived their entire life in a world without vision, the sudden onset of sight during an NDE was not just surprising. It was transformative. Several participants told Ring and Cooper that the visual aspect of their NDE was one of the most emotionally powerful parts of the entire experience — even more so than the encounter with light, or the sense of peace, or the meeting with deceased loved ones. To see for the first time — to suddenly perceive a dimension of reality you never knew existed — was an experience of such overwhelming beauty and strangeness that many of them struggled to process it even years later.
The adventitiously blind participants (Group 2) also reported visual NDEs, but their cases, while interesting, are less evidentially powerful because their brains had been trained for vision at one point. A physicalist could theorize that residual visual processing capacity from their sighted years was somehow reactivated. For the congenitally blind, however, there was no residual capacity to reactivate. The visual cortex had been repurposed from birth. There was nothing to "turn back on."
It is also worth noting that the severely visually impaired participants (Group 3) reported a similar pattern. Several described their NDE vision as far clearer, more vivid, and more detailed than anything their limited residual sight had ever provided. One participant who could only perceive vague blurs of light and shadow described seeing with perfect clarity during her NDE — sharply focused images, bright colors, individual features on people's faces. The experience was, she said, like the difference between looking through a frosted window and suddenly having the window removed entirely. The soul, it seems, was not constrained by the body's partial vision any more than it was constrained by the body's total blindness.47
Ring and Cooper coined the term "mindsight" because they felt that ordinary language failed to capture what the blind NDErs were describing. The term reflected their conclusion that the perception occurring during these NDEs was not ordinary vision — it was not happening through the eyes or the visual cortex. It was happening through the mind itself, or, as Ring carefully suggested, through some aspect of the person's consciousness that transcended the physical body.22
Ring noted several important features of mindsight that distinguished it from normal vision:
First, it was often described as an "all-at-once" perception — a kind of 360-degree awareness rather than the focused, directional seeing that sighted people experience through their eyes. Several blind NDErs said they seemed to perceive everything around them simultaneously, not just what was "in front of" them.
Second, the perception was extraordinarily vivid and detailed — more real, many said, than normal waking consciousness. This "hyperreal" quality is consistent with what sighted NDErs also report, and it is one of the features that distinguishes NDEs from dreams or hallucinations.23
Third, the blind NDErs consistently distinguished mindsight from all other forms of perception they had ever experienced. It was not like dreaming. It was not like imagining. It was not like hearing or touching. It was something entirely new — a form of awareness they had no framework for.
I find Ring's term "mindsight" illuminating, but I think the theological framework provides a better explanation than Ring himself offered. Ring was cautious about drawing metaphysical conclusions. He was a careful scientist who wanted to let the data speak for itself. But the data, I believe, speak clearly: what the blind NDErs experienced was the soul perceiving directly, without the mediation of physical sense organs. When the soul separated from the body during the NDE, it was no longer limited by the body's sensory deficits. The blind eyes were left behind. The soul could see — because seeing, in the deepest sense, is not a function of the eyes. It is a function of the person, the self, the soul.24
I want to spell out the philosophical argument carefully, because I think this is one of the most powerful arguments in this entire book.
On physicalism — the view that the mind is identical to or produced by the brain — visual experience requires a functioning visual cortex. This is not a controversial claim. It is a basic fact of neuroscience. The visual cortex must have been shaped by visual input during the critical developmental period in early childhood. Without this visual input during those early years, the visual cortex does not develop its normal architecture. The neurons that would have processed edges, colors, shapes, and motion are instead recruited for other purposes — processing touch, hearing, or spatial awareness through non-visual means.25
This means that a person who is blind from birth has no neural architecture for vision. The hardware does not exist. Not because it was broken or damaged (though the eyes may be), but because it was never built in the first place. The brain's visual processing system was never organized, never trained, never developed.
Therefore, on physicalism, it is not merely unlikely that a congenitally blind person would have visual experiences during an NDE. It is impossible. You cannot run visual processing on neural hardware that was never constructed for visual processing. It would be like expecting a calculator to play music — not because the calculator is broken, but because it was never designed to produce sound.
And yet, congenitally blind NDErs report visual experiences. Vicki Umipeg saw her own body, the medical staff, and a transcendent realm of beauty. Brad Barrows saw snow on the ground, plowed streets, and his roommate leaving the room. Others reported colors, shapes, landscapes, and people — visual content they had never experienced in their entire lives.
The Core Argument: On physicalism, visual experience requires a visual cortex that was trained by visual input during early development. A congenitally blind person's brain lacks this architecture entirely — it was never built. Therefore, visual NDEs in the congenitally blind are impossible on physicalism. Yet they occur. Something other than the brain must be doing the seeing. On substance dualism, the soul perceives directly, independently of the physical sense organs.
One of the most common physicalist responses to NDE evidence is what I call the "enhanced brain function" hypothesis. When confronted with veridical NDEs, some physicalists suggest that the brain, under extreme stress, might ramp up its processing capacity — producing vivid experiences and perhaps even enhanced perception. I think this hypothesis is already deeply implausible (as we discussed in Chapters 6 and 7, consciousness during cardiac arrest is the opposite of what we would expect from a brain under extreme stress). But even if we granted the hypothesis for the sake of argument, it would do nothing to explain blind NDEs.
Why? Because enhancing a brain's function is not the same as creating function that never existed. You can overclock a computer's processor to make it run faster — but you cannot overclock a processor into performing tasks it was never designed to handle. You cannot "enhance" a visual cortex that was never built. Even if some extraordinary stress mechanism could push the brain to its maximum capacity, the maximum capacity of a brain that has no visual processing architecture is zero visual processing. Enhancing zero still gives you zero.26
This is what makes the blind NDE evidence qualitatively different from other NDE evidence. With sighted NDErs, a physicalist can always theorize some hidden brain mechanism — improbable, but theoretically possible. With congenitally blind NDErs, there is no brain mechanism to theorize. The mechanism does not exist and cannot exist, because the developmental window for building it closed decades ago.
On substance dualism — the view that human beings consist of both a material body and an immaterial soul — the explanation for blind NDEs is simple and elegant. The soul has its own capacity for perception. When a person's body is functioning normally, the soul perceives the world through the body's sense organs — eyes, ears, skin, and so on. The body acts as an instrument through which the soul engages the physical world. If the instrument is damaged — as in the case of blindness — the soul's perception through that instrument is impaired.27
But during an NDE, when the soul separates from the body, it is no longer limited by the body's deficits. A person who was blind because their eyes or optic nerves were damaged is no longer perceiving through those damaged organs. The soul perceives directly. And so, for the first time in their lives, blind NDErs experience what sighted people take for granted: visual awareness of the world around them.
This is exactly what the blind NDErs themselves report. They describe the experience as utterly new, utterly different from anything they have ever known. They are not recovering something they lost — they never had it. They are experiencing a dimension of perception that their physical bodies never provided. And the theological implications are profound: the soul is more than the body. The person is more than their physical limitations. The real person — the soul — is whole, complete, and capable of perception that transcends the broken body it inhabits.
As John Cooper cautiously observed in his landmark study Body, Soul, and Life Everlasting, while near-death experiences cannot definitively prove the existence of the soul, they certainly seem to support it. Cooper noted cases where individuals reported meeting persons whose deaths were unknown to them — information that was later verified — and acknowledged that such experiences present a genuine challenge to materialist explanations of human consciousness.28
I believe in treating skeptics fairly. Good arguments deserve good responses, and dismissing objections without engaging them honestly would not serve the reader well. The skeptical objections to blind NDEs deserve careful attention. Let me walk through the major ones.
This objection suggests that since blind people might dream visually, their visual NDEs could just be a form of dreaming or hallucination. But the claim is factually incorrect when applied to the congenitally blind.
Research on dreaming in the blind has consistently shown that congenitally blind people do not dream visually. People who were born blind dream in other sensory modalities — they dream in sounds, textures, smells, and emotions, but not in images. They do not see in their dreams because their brains have never processed visual information and therefore cannot generate visual imagery.29
People who became blind later in life (after having had years of visual experience) can and do dream visually — their brains retained visual memories from their sighted years, and these memories can surface in dreams. But congenitally blind persons have no visual memories to draw on. Their dreaming is entirely non-visual.
This is a crucial distinction. If congenitally blind people do not dream visually — and the research is clear that they do not — then their visual NDEs cannot be explained as dream-like hallucinations. The brain that cannot generate visual dreams cannot generate visual hallucinations either, for the same reason: there is no visual processing architecture to produce the imagery.
The blind NDErs themselves recognized this. When asked to compare their NDE to dreaming, they consistently said it was nothing like a dream. Dreams, for a blind person, involve sounds, textures, and emotions — but never sight. Their NDEs included a completely new form of perception that was unlike anything in their previous experience, waking or sleeping.30
Perhaps, the skeptic suggests, the blind NDEr's brain is taking auditory or tactile information and "translating" it into something that feels like a visual experience. Maybe hearing the sounds of the operating room — the beeping monitors, the voices of doctors, the clatter of instruments — provides enough information for the brain to construct a visual-seeming representation of the scene.
This is a creative hypothesis, but it fails on several counts.
First, the NDErs specifically described seeing things — colors, shapes, spatial arrangements, the visual appearance of people and objects. These are perceptual categories that a congenitally blind person has no framework for. A person who has never experienced color cannot "translate" auditory data into color. Color is not a concept they possess. A person who has never seen spatial depth cannot "translate" sounds into three-dimensional spatial arrangements. The translation hypothesis presupposes that the brain has the output categories (visual features like color, shape, and depth) even though it has never developed them. But that is exactly the point at issue — those categories were never developed in a congenitally blind brain.31
Second, several of the reports were verified by sighted witnesses. Brad Barrows accurately described his roommate leaving the room — something that could not have been known through sound alone, since Brad was unconscious. Vicki Umipeg described visual details of her medical environment. If the "visual" experiences were merely confused translations of auditory data, we would expect them to be vague and inaccurate. Instead, they were specific and confirmed.
Third, the NDErs themselves clearly distinguished their NDE perception from their normal non-visual perception. They knew what hearing felt like. They knew what touch felt like. They said the NDE experience was categorically different — not hearing recoded as seeing, but genuine seeing of a kind they had never known.
This objection suggests that blind people lack the vocabulary and conceptual framework to describe visual experiences, and therefore their reports should not be trusted. Perhaps they are simply using visual language they have picked up from sighted people without really understanding what they are saying.
This is a fair concern to raise, and it is one that Ring and Cooper took seriously. They were careful in their interviews to probe whether the participants were genuinely describing visual perception or merely using visual vocabulary in a loose or metaphorical way. Ring, an experienced researcher, was trained to distinguish between genuine reports and linguistic borrowing.32
What they found was telling. The congenitally blind participants did indeed struggle with visual vocabulary — precisely because they were trying to describe something they had never experienced before. They fumbled for words. They used approximations. They said things like "I could suddenly notice them and see them" but then paused to clarify that this "seeing" was unlike anything they had ever known. This linguistic struggle actually increases the credibility of their reports. If they were simply parroting visual language from sighted culture, we would expect them to use it fluently and confidently. Instead, they used it haltingly, searchingly — like someone trying to describe a color to a person who has never seen one.33
Moreover — and this is the clinching point — several of their visual descriptions were verified by sighted people. Brad's roommate confirmed that he had gotten up and left the room. The weather conditions Brad described (snow everywhere, plowed streets) were confirmed. When a blind person accurately describes things they have never seen, and sighted witnesses confirm the description, the "unreliable report" objection loses its force.
This is the most honest and fair-minded objection, and it deserves a thoughtful response. Ring and Cooper studied 31 blind and visually impaired persons, of whom 14 were congenitally blind. By the standards of medical research, this is a small sample. A skeptic could reasonably ask: can we draw firm conclusions from 14 cases?
I want to acknowledge the legitimacy of this concern. A larger sample would indeed be welcome, and I hope that future researchers will build on Ring and Cooper's pioneering work with additional studies. The practical difficulty, of course, is that congenitally blind persons who have NDEs are a very small population. You need someone who is both blind from birth and has a close brush with death. Finding 14 such individuals was itself a significant research achievement.34
But here is the key point: the evidential power of this data does not depend on a large sample size. Even a single verified case of a congenitally blind person accurately reporting visual information during an NDE would be devastating for physicalism. If one person whose brain literally cannot produce visual experience nevertheless has accurate visual experience during an NDE, then the experience is not being produced by the brain. Period. You do not need a hundred cases to establish this. You need one — if it is well-documented, carefully verified, and honestly reported.
Ring and Cooper did not provide just one case. They provided multiple cases with consistent findings across congenitally blind, adventitiously blind, and visually impaired participants. The consistency of the pattern across different types and degrees of blindness strengthens the conclusion considerably.35
As J. Steve Miller observes in his discussion of the evidence for NDEs, the blind NDE cases represent one of the most formidable challenges to materialist explanations of consciousness, precisely because they eliminate the one thing physicalism absolutely requires — a functioning physical substrate for the experience in question.36
Summary of Skeptical Objections and Responses:
"Blind people dream visually" — False for the congenitally blind. Research confirms they dream in non-visual modalities only.
"These are translations of non-visual data" — The descriptions include perceptual categories (color, shape) that congenitally blind brains have never developed. Verified details rule out guesswork.
"The reports are unreliable" — The participants' struggle with visual vocabulary actually increases credibility. Multiple descriptions were confirmed by sighted witnesses.
"The sample size is too small" — Even one verified case would be devastating for physicalism. Ring documented multiple cases with consistent findings.
Ring and Cooper's Mindsight study was the first systematic investigation of NDEs in the blind, but they are not the only researchers who have noted this phenomenon. Other NDE researchers have encountered similar cases, and the consistency of the reports across different studies and different researchers strengthens the overall picture.
Pim van Lommel, the Dutch cardiologist whose landmark prospective NDE study was published in The Lancet in 2001, noted that blind persons have reported visual perception during NDEs. Van Lommel, who has been studying NDEs for decades, found this category of evidence particularly significant because it directly challenges the assumption that consciousness is produced by the brain.37
Bruce Greyson, the University of Virginia psychiatrist who is perhaps the most respected academic NDE researcher in the world, has also discussed blind NDEs in his comprehensive overview After (2021). Greyson notes that these cases are among the most difficult for materialist theories to explain, because they involve perception through sensory channels that do not exist in the patient's brain.38
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the pioneering researcher on death and dying, also reported encountering blind patients who described visual experiences during their near-death episodes. While Kübler-Ross's later career became controversial due to her involvement with certain mediums and channelers (a topic we will address in Chapter 28), her early clinical observations of dying patients remain valuable. She reported that blind patients who had NDEs described seeing for the first time during their experiences and were deeply moved by the visual beauty they encountered.39
The convergence of evidence from multiple independent researchers — Ring, van Lommel, Greyson, Kübler-Ross, and others — makes the blind NDE phenomenon difficult to dismiss as an artifact of any single researcher's methodology or bias. These are different researchers, working in different countries, using different methods, and they are all finding the same thing: blind people see during NDEs.
I want to step back now from the individual cases and think about what this evidence means for our understanding of human nature. Because if blind NDEs are genuine — and I believe the evidence strongly supports that they are — then they teach us something profound about the soul.
The most important lesson is this: the soul is not defective. The body may be damaged, broken, limited, impaired. A person may be blind, deaf, paralyzed, or cognitively disabled. But the soul — the real person, the self that bears the image of God — is whole. The soul's capacities are not limited by the body's deficits. When the soul is freed from the body's constraints during an NDE, it can see, hear, think, and perceive with a clarity and fullness that may surpass anything the body could provide, even at its best.40
This connects to a fundamental principle in theological anthropology — the study of what it means to be human. As Joshua Farris argues in An Introduction to Theological Anthropology, the soul is the bearer of personhood and the image of God. Our bodies are essential to our earthly existence, and Scripture affirms the goodness and importance of the body. But the body is not what makes us persons. The soul is. The body is the soul's instrument for engaging the material world — a precious and God-given instrument, to be sure, but an instrument nonetheless. When the instrument is broken, the person remains. The image of God is not diminished by a broken body. The dignity and worth of the human person does not depend on having a body that works properly.48
This is a deeply comforting truth, and it is one that aligns beautifully with the biblical teaching on the soul. As we explored in Chapter 5, the Bible teaches that human beings are composed of both body and soul — that the soul is a real, immaterial substance that can exist and function independently of the body. The blind NDE evidence provides striking empirical confirmation of this teaching. The soul is real. It perceives. It is not bound by the body's limitations.
For those who struggle with disabilities — and for those who love someone who does — this is not abstract philosophy. It is a message of hope. The wheelchair-bound will walk. The deaf will hear. The blind will see. Not because their bodies will be magically repaired in this life, but because the person inside the body — the soul — is already whole. And when that soul finally separates from the broken body, whether temporarily in an NDE or permanently at death, the limitations fall away.
I think about this when I consider the severely disabled — those with profound intellectual disabilities, those in persistent vegetative states, those whose brains are so damaged that they cannot communicate, recognize loved ones, or engage with the world in any visible way. Many physicalists would say that these individuals have lost their personhood, or at least that their inner life has been destroyed along with their brain function. But if blind NDEs are real — if the soul can perceive without the sense organs, think without the neural architecture, experience without the brain — then the person inside that broken body may be far more aware, far more present, far more alive than the body lets on. The body is silent. But the soul may be singing.
As a Christian, I find this deeply moving. The apostle Paul wrote about the resurrection body: "It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body" (1 Corinthians 15:43–44, ESV). The NDE evidence suggests that even before the resurrection, when the soul separates from the body, it is already free from the body's weaknesses. The blind see. The full restoration awaits the resurrection — but the soul, even now, is more than its earthly vessel.
For those interested in philosophy, blind NDEs have profound implications for what philosophers call the "mind-body problem" — the ancient and ongoing debate about how the mind relates to the body, and specifically to the brain.
The dominant position in contemporary philosophy of mind and cognitive science is some version of physicalism — the view that the mind just is the brain, or that mental states are nothing more than brain states, or that consciousness is "what the brain does." On this view, every mental event — every thought, every perception, every feeling — is identical to or produced by some physical event in the brain. No brain event, no mental event. It is as simple as that.49
But blind NDEs present physicalism with a challenge that goes beyond the usual philosophical objections (important as those are). The usual objections to physicalism — the hard problem of consciousness, the argument from qualia, the argument from intentionality — are philosophical arguments. They show that physicalism faces deep theoretical problems in explaining how subjective experience can arise from purely physical processes. These are powerful arguments, and I discuss them more fully in Chapter 35. But they are arguments about what is theoretically possible or impossible.
Blind NDEs, by contrast, are not a theoretical argument. They are an empirical observation. They do not argue that physicalism should be false on theoretical grounds. They show that physicalism is false on the basis of observed facts. A congenitally blind person whose brain lacks visual processing architecture reports accurate visual experience during an NDE. This is a fact — documented, interviewed, verified. And this fact is incompatible with the claim that visual experience requires a visual cortex. Either the visual cortex is not required for visual experience (which undermines a central tenet of physicalist neuroscience), or the experience is being produced by something other than the brain (which is the dualist conclusion).
The philosopher David Chalmers famously distinguished between the "easy problems" of consciousness (explaining how the brain processes information, discriminates stimuli, and controls behavior) and the "hard problem" (explaining why there is subjective experience at all — why there is "something it is like" to see red or taste chocolate). Blind NDEs, I would suggest, create what we might call an "impossible problem" for physicalism — not merely a hard problem of explaining how the brain produces visual experience in general, but the impossible problem of explaining how a brain that lacks visual processing architecture produces visual experience at all.50
Blind NDEs also have direct implications for the doctrine of the conscious intermediate state — the biblical teaching that the soul is alive, awake, and aware between death and the final resurrection. This teaching, which we will examine in depth in Chapter 20, is one of the most important theological claims in this book. And blind NDEs provide a powerful line of empirical support for it.
Here is why. If the soul can perceive without the body — if a blind person can see when their soul separates from their body — then the soul does not need the body in order to be conscious. The body is an instrument the soul uses during earthly life, but it is not the source of consciousness. Consciousness belongs to the soul. And when the body dies, the soul does not "go to sleep" or cease to exist. It continues — perceiving, thinking, experiencing, aware.
This is exactly what Scripture teaches. Paul wrote, "We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8, ESV). To be "away from the body" implies conscious personal existence without a body. And Paul describes this state as being "at home with the Lord" — not as unconsciousness, not as soul sleep, not as non-existence, but as a personal, relational, aware state of being with Christ. The blind NDE evidence confirms that this is possible — the soul really can function, perceive, and experience without the body.
Consider the implications carefully. If Vicki Umipeg can see — truly see, with accuracy and detail — while her body lies unconscious on an operating table, then the soul does not require the body in order to experience the world. And if the soul can perceive during the brief separation of an NDE, there is no reason in principle why it cannot continue to perceive after the permanent separation of death. The intermediate state — the period between death and resurrection during which believers are "with Christ" (Philippians 1:23) — is not a theological abstraction. It is a state of conscious, perceptive, relational existence for the soul that has left the body behind. Blind NDEs give us a brief glimpse of what that looks like.
Some theologians have argued for "soul sleep" — the view that the soul is unconscious between death and resurrection. Others, particularly in the conditional immortality movement, have adopted full physicalism, arguing that there is no immaterial soul at all and that death is simply the cessation of the person until God recreates them at the resurrection. Both of these positions are difficult to maintain in light of blind NDE evidence. If the soul can be conscious and perceive while the body is clinically dead — and do things that the body's brain is literally incapable of producing — then the soul is real, it is immaterial, and it is conscious when separated from the body. Soul sleep and physicalism both fail to account for the data.51
For those in the conditional immortality movement who have adopted physicalism — the view that human beings are entirely physical, with no immaterial soul — blind NDEs pose a serious challenge. If physicalism is true, then consciousness cannot exist without a functioning brain. But blind NDEs demonstrate consciousness (including visual consciousness) in the absence of the neural hardware required for that consciousness. Physicalism cannot account for this. Substance dualism can. And substance dualism is entirely compatible with conditional immortality, as we will discuss in Chapter 36. The soul can be real, immaterial, and conscious after death — and still be contingent, dependent on God for its continued existence.41
I want to note a connection that may not be immediately obvious but is theologically significant. If the soul can perceive and function independently of the body — as blind NDEs demonstrate — then this has implications for our understanding of Jesus Christ during the period between His death and resurrection.
The historic Christian faith teaches that when Jesus died on the cross, His body was placed in the tomb. But what about His soul? The Bible indicates that Jesus' soul was active during this period. He said to the thief on the cross, "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43, ESV). Peter wrote that Christ "went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison" (1 Peter 3:19, ESV). These texts imply that Jesus' soul was conscious, active, and functioning between His death on Friday and His resurrection on Sunday morning — what theologians call the triduum mortis (the three days of death).
On physicalism, this is very difficult to explain. If the mind is the brain, and Jesus' brain was dead, then Jesus could not have been conscious during the triduum mortis. He could not have been "in paradise" with the thief. He could not have "proclaimed to the spirits in prison." His promise to the thief would have been meaningless — or at least would need to be radically reinterpreted to mean something other than what it plainly says.
But on substance dualism — the view that Jesus possessed a human soul as well as a human body, as the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451) affirmed — His consciousness continued because His soul continued. The church father Gregory of Nazianzus famously declared, "What has not been assumed has not been healed" — meaning that Christ must have taken on a full human nature, including a human soul, in order to redeem the full human person. If Christ had a human soul, and if that soul is immaterial and capable of functioning independently of the body (as blind NDEs empirically demonstrate), then Christ's consciousness during the triduum mortis is not a theological puzzle. It is exactly what we would expect.42
The blind NDE evidence thus provides empirical support for the kind of disembodied consciousness that the triduum mortis requires. This connection is explored in full detail in the companion volume, The Word Made Flesh.
Cooper, in Body, Soul, and Life Everlasting, uses an analogy that I find helpful for understanding the relationship between the brain and the soul. Think of a radio. The radio receives a signal and converts it into sound. If the radio is damaged, the sound is distorted or lost. But the signal itself — coming from the radio station — is unaffected by the damage to the radio. The problem is in the receiver, not in the source.43
In the same way, the brain may function as a kind of "receiver" or "transmitter" for consciousness, rather than as the producer of consciousness. If the brain is damaged (as in blindness, dementia, or brain injury), consciousness may be impaired — not because consciousness itself is damaged, but because the instrument through which it operates is damaged. When the instrument is set aside — as during an NDE — consciousness continues, unimpaired and perhaps even enhanced, because the limitation was never in the soul. It was always in the body.
Blind NDEs are perhaps the most vivid illustration of this analogy. A blind person's "radio" (their eyes and visual cortex) is broken. It cannot receive the "signal" (visual information from the world). But during an NDE, the person perceives without the radio. They see without eyes. The signal — consciousness, perception, awareness — was always there. The radio was just broken. And when the soul stepped away from the broken radio, it could perceive directly what the radio had never been able to deliver.44
This analogy is not perfect, of course. No analogy captures the full mystery of the mind-body relationship. But it captures the essential point: the soul is the source of conscious experience, and the body is the instrument through which the soul engages the physical world. Damage the instrument, and you impair the engagement. Remove the instrument, and the soul engages directly — perhaps more clearly than ever before.
Before we close this chapter, I want to step back and show how blind NDEs fit into the broader evidential framework we have been building throughout Part II of this book.
In Chapter 6, we examined veridical NDEs — cases where patients accurately reported information during their clinical death. These cases demonstrate that consciousness can perceive the physical world while the brain is non-functional. The conclusion: consciousness is not produced by brain activity, because it continues when brain activity ceases.
In Chapter 7, we examined the Pam Reynolds case — a patient whose brain was deliberately shut down (no blood, no electrical activity) and who nevertheless had vivid, accurate, verified experiences. The conclusion: consciousness can function with zero measurable brain activity.
Now, in this chapter, we have examined blind NDEs — cases where the brain lacks the very hardware needed for visual experience, yet visual experience occurs. The conclusion: consciousness can function without the neural architecture required for the experience in question.
Each of these lines of evidence is independently powerful. Together, they form a convergent case that is, I believe, overwhelming. The veridical cases show that consciousness perceives when the brain is inactive. The Pam Reynolds case shows that consciousness perceives when the brain has zero measurable activity. The blind NDE cases show that consciousness perceives even when the brain lacks the physical capacity for the type of perception in question. Every physicalist escape route has been closed.45
Notice how each line of evidence addresses a different skeptical objection. When confronted with veridical NDEs, the physicalist says, "Maybe there was some residual brain activity we did not detect." The Pam Reynolds case responds: "We measured. There was none." When confronted with Pam Reynolds, the physicalist says, "Maybe the experience happened before or after the standstill, when there was brain activity." The blind NDE cases respond: "Even if there were brain activity, the brain lacks the hardware for the type of experience reported." Each escape route that the physicalist opens is closed by the next line of evidence. By the time we reach the blind NDEs, the physicalist has nowhere left to go. The brain cannot produce what was never built into it.
As we will see in Chapter 9, children's NDEs add yet another layer — ruling out cultural expectation and learned behavior. And in Chapter 10, shared-death experiences will rule out the "dying brain" hypothesis entirely. The convergence is remarkable. Different types of evidence, from different researchers, in different medical contexts, with different kinds of participants — all pointing to the same conclusion: consciousness is not reducible to brain function. The soul is real. And it survives the death of the body.
I called this chapter "The Impossible Evidence" because that is exactly what blind NDEs represent on a physicalist worldview. They are impossible. A congenitally blind person seeing — actually seeing, with accuracy and specificity — during a near-death experience is something that physicalism says cannot happen. The brain does not have the hardware. The neural pathways do not exist. The visual cortex was never built. On physicalism, visual experience in the congenitally blind is flatly impossible.
And yet it happens. Vicki Umipeg saw her own body for the first time. Brad Barrows saw snow on the ground and his roommate leaving the room. Other congenitally blind participants reported visual perception that stunned them — a mode of awareness they had never imagined was possible.
On substance dualism, these experiences make perfect sense. The soul perceives. The body is an instrument, not the source. When the instrument is damaged — or when the soul is temporarily freed from it during an NDE — the soul's own perceptual capacities are revealed. The blind see, not because their eyes are healed, but because they never needed their eyes in the first place. They needed their soul. And the soul was always whole.
I believe this is one of the most powerful lines of evidence in the entire NDE literature. It challenges the most fundamental assumption of physicalism — that all mental experience is produced by the brain — and it does so not with philosophical arguments (as important as those are) but with empirical data. Real people. Real experiences. Verified details. Impossible on physicalism. Perfectly consistent with the biblical teaching that we are more than our bodies.
The prophet Isaiah, looking forward to the day of final redemption, wrote: "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy" (Isaiah 35:5–6, ESV). Christians have always understood this as a promise about the resurrection — the day when God will restore every broken body and heal every disability. But blind NDEs hint at something even more remarkable. The blind do not have to wait for the resurrection to see. Their souls can see already. The body was always the limitation, not the person. And when the body's limitations are removed — even temporarily, even for a few minutes during a cardiac arrest — the person within is revealed in all their God-given wholeness. The soul sees what the eyes never could.
In the next chapter, we will turn to another uniquely powerful category of evidence: near-death experiences reported by young children. If blind NDEs close the "hidden brain mechanism" escape hatch, children's NDEs close the "cultural expectation" escape hatch. The case continues to build.
